This painting is inspired by the Paua shells and Giant Clams I saw snorkelling in the Cook Islands. I was mesmerised by their natural array of colours shimmering below the waves, and couldn’t wait to return to my studio to paint them! I chose iridescent pigments and Pacific Ocean colours to recreate my underwater experience.
Paua hold unique significance in many cultures across the world. In New Zealand, the Maori beleive the way their colours move and play in the light are a symbol of change and transition. They are also believed to bring connectivity and harmony to relationships.
